Welcome to The Thompson at Fulton Market, an exquisite fusion of history and contemporary luxury brought to life by Marquette Companies.
Once the site of the historic Mary H. Thompson Hospital, this landmark has been transformed into a sophisticated 210-unit apartment complex, honoring the legacy of Dr. Mary H. Thompson, Chicago’s first female doctor and the first woman known to perform major surgery in the city.
A Legacy Preserved
Dr. Mary H. Thompson’s contributions to Chicago’s medical history are profound. In 1865, she established the city’s first hospital dedicated to women and children. Her influence extended beyond this institution as she founded a medical school and a nursing school for women, paving the way for future generations of female medical professionals.
The original five-story brick and limestone building, erected decades after Dr. Thompson’s passing, now stands as a tribute to her lasting impact. Despite the challenges faced by the Women’s Treatment Center, which previously occupied the site, its transformation into The Thompson at Fulton Market ensures that Dr. Thompson’s legacy continues to inspire.
Adaptive Reuse and Modern Elegance
Marquette Companies undertook a remarkable adaptive reuse project, seamlessly blending the century-old hospital structure with new construction. A wing of the hospital was demolished to make way for a new 12-story building while preserving key elements of the original architecture. The building’s healthcare roots are honored with an engraving that reads, “Founded by Dr. Mary Thompson.”
Designed by Chicago-based ParkFowler Plus, The Thompson’s interiors retain some original features, including exposed brick and pillars. Apartments in the preserved hospital structure feature exposed ceilings, combining historic charm with contemporary finishes, such as deep blue-black accents and wood laminate floors.
“Where are you going to find a luxury building with these kinds of touches?” asks Sarah Otis,
the building’s property manager.
